When should I have an eye exam?
Adults should have their eyes examined to keep their prescription current and check for early signs of eye disease. As well, eye exams for children play an important role in ensuring normal vision development and academic achievement. Children should have their first eye exam by 6 months of age and annually thereafter.
All Eyes On Me also recommends a yearly comprehensive eye exam for all patients to ensure optimal vision and eye health. An annual, comprehensive eye examination from a certified Optometrist can detect early signs of eye disease.
Will my eye exam be covered by OHIP?
For children and young adults up to age 19, OHIP covers one (1) comprehensive eye examination annually. For adults aged 20-64, only those having certain medical conditions are insured by OHIP annually for an eye exam. For seniors 65+, OHIP insures one comprehensive eye examination annually.
Am I a candidate for LASIK surgery?
LASIK is a great option to reduce your dependence on glasses and contact lenses. Over the years the technologies used in this elective procedure have advanced, which has resulted in fewer side effects and greater outcomes. Our optometrists co-manage LASIK surgeries with many reputable clinics throughout the GTA. In order to determine if you would be a candidate, schedule a comprehensive eye exam at one of our clinics and let your doctor know you are interested in LASIK. They will perform all the necessary testing, discuss the procedure and expectations, then send a referral for a consultation with a local surgery clinic.
What is the right age to start wearing contacts?
There is no one age where it is ok to begin wearing contact lenses. Some patients begin wearing medically-necessary contact lenses as young as 4 years old. For leisurely wear, it is best to discuss with your optometrist, who will review the pros and cons of contacts, as well as recommend the most suitable lens for each patient. Generally, as long as the child can demonstrate good cleaning and hygiene practices, and they are motivated to wear the lenses, they will be a good candidate.
Our optometrists will order trial lenses for your child and teach them how to insert and remove them. They will also assess the fit and movement of the lenses, among other parameters that are important for safe contact lens wear.
My contacts are making my eyes dry, can anything be done?
It is no secret that contact lenses can cause dry eyes. In fact, it is estimated that 15% of contact lens wearers develop intolerance and stop wearing their contacts every year. If your contact lenses are bothering your eyes, or you are having a hard time keeping the lenses on for long periods of time, discuss this with your optometrist. There are many lens options on the market, and our doctors will be happy to make recommendations. There are also eye drops that are available to help lubricate your eyes while wearing the lenses. All Eyes on Me is proud to offer several services in our Dry Eye Spa which also facilitate more comfortable contact lens wear. Speak to one of our optometrists today to learn more.
Can my headaches be related to my eyes?
Although headaches can be pretty common and benign, new and persistent headaches shouldn't be taken lightly. One cause of headaches can be eyestrain and eye fatigue. This can be exacerbated by digital screens and devices, which are unavoidable these days. Headaches can also be a result of certain systemic and ocular eye conditions. The best course of action would be to schedule an eye exam to address these concerns.
Why is my child's vision changing so quickly? Is there anything that be done?
At birth, our eyes are about 80% of their adult size. A child's vision is expected to change as their eyes grow, and this process is likely to continue into their early twenties. As such, the need to adjust the prescription will naturally change. Certain children may benefit from Myopia Control, which is the area of children's eye care dedicated to slowing down childhood myopia progression. Our optometrists can help you determine if your child will benefit from Myopia Control, and which treatments will be best suited for them.
Why does the doctor put these drops in my eyes?
Dilation drops are an important part of the eye exam. They open up the pupil and enable the optometrist to clearly view all the structures in the back of the eye, including the optic nerve, macula and peripheral retina. The short-term effects of these drops include blurred vision at near and sensitivity to light for a few hours. Patients are typically ok to drive home afterwards, but if they feel uncomfortable then it is recommended they bring a driver to their appointment.
There is a family history of eye disease - How will I know if I have it to?
The early signs of most eye diseases are often 'quiet' and typically asymptomatic. Early detection of eye disease can often lead to better long-term prognosis. As such, routine eye exams are the best way to look for the onset of any eye disease, including the ones that tend to run in families.
Will wearing eyeglasses make my eyes worse?
Despite popular belief, wearing glasses will not make your vision worse. Glasses help redirect light rays onto the appropriate location on the retina. Blurry vision results from when these light rays land too far in front of (myopia) or too far behind (hyperopia) the retina. As adults our eyes are prone to change naturally, but rest assured that wearing your glasses has no impact on this.
